Uploading ECU tuning file to my car: how to write a remap

We get a lot of questions from clients such as: How to read an ECU file? How To Load a Custom Tune? How do I upload a remap to my car?

There is a huge number of ECU tuning solutions in the world and it is easy to get confused in them without having experience and a good understanding of the issue. Let’s try to figure this out together.

Important points to understand ECU files upload process

  1. Firstly, we have to make a physical connection between the car and your laptop, for this you need an J2534 PassThru Adapter.
  2. Secondly, we need a laptop Uploader (Flasher) software that knows how to work with ECU using a certain protocol.
  3. Thirdly, the Uploader software will require the purchase of a license, which is usually distributed on a USB dongle. You can later purchase licenses for additional vehicles and control units and write them to this dongle.

Assembling such a kit is certainly more difficult than using an off-the-shelf solution. As a reward for such difficulties, you can get the opportunity to flash your car by spending only a couple hundred bucks.

J2534 PassThru Adapters

No matter which ECU you intend to reprogram, you will need an adapter like this. Quality adapters are not widely available, and those that support multiple ECUs tend to be more expensive.

Select your adapter only after confirming that the uploader software is compatible with it, as indicated in the documentation (references will be provided later on).

Tactrix Openport 2.0 ($169.00)

One of the popular and high-quality adapters, supported by the majority of uploaders. Ideal for reprogramming most vehicles via the OBD-II port.

How to choose an adapter?

It’s simple. First, find a suitable flasher (uploader) software, then check its adapters list for compatibility with your ECU. Next, look for a J2534 adapter based on your requirements.

Uploaders | Flashers

I prefer only one uploader, and this is not an advertisement. It is very affordable. It allows you to purchase licenses only for the necessary ECUs. It also enables ECU identification before purchasing a license, which greatly reduces the likelihood of mistakenly buying the wrong license.

PCMflash (from 57€)

The uploader has Russian origins and a website that is not multilingual. However, you can purchase it from dealers in any country worldwide. You can read the website through Google Chrome’s translator and ask your questions to support in English.

Here is the link to the page with prices for licenses for various ECUs and a list of dealers where you can purchase the software.

Please note that when purchasing your first license, you will also need to pay for a USB dongle and its delivery.

USB-dongle

The program requires a laptop with Windows to operate.

Optional: Three ways to connect to ECU

Additional cables and adapters may be necessary depending on your ECU connection method.

OBD

Good news! You won’t need any extra cables or adapters. Just plug your device straight into the vehicle’s diagnostic connector and you’re all set!

Bench

The engine control unit is removed (but not opened). Reading and writing are then available in Bench.

I just wanted to give you a heads-up that you’ll need a cable or optional adapter. The instructions are in the manual that came with your flasher, so just take a peek!

Boot

The engine control unit is removed and opened. Then reading and writing are available in Boot.

It does require some locksmith skills to open the ECU, but you’ve got that covered. You’ll also need either an expensive adapter to connect to the electronic board, or you can just solder to the necessary contacts. Of course, you’ll need a special adapter cable.

Where to get information and instructions

I’ve put this issue in a separate section for everyone to read and understand once again.
Nobody knows how to flash any ECU in the world.

But on your flasher’s site there are instructions, and on the uploader forum there are solutions to possible problems from other chiptuning masters.
